The Most Prominent Websites in Wikipedia References

Every Wikipedia reference forms a small bridge between the encyclopedia and the wider web. Taken together, these connections create an enormous information landscape and some websites appear far more prominently than others. To identify them, more than 400 million references from approximately 68 million articles across more than 300 Wikipedia language editions were analyzed, using data from July 2026.

The resulting ranking is based on the PR model, which considers both the presence of a website in an article’s references and the article’s popularity among readers. This makes it possible to look beyond simple citation counts and examine which websites are most visible across Wikipedia’s reference ecosystem.

PR model: reader popularity

The PR model approaches website importance from the reader’s perspective. It asks: How visible is a website in the Wikipedia articles that people actually read?
For every article, the model calculates the proportion of references that point to a particular website. This proportion is then weighted by the square root of the article’s corrected pageview count. Finally, the contributions from all eligible articles are added together.
For a website w, its PR score is calculated as follows:

PR(w)=∑a∈Aref(Pa⋅Ra,wRa)

The symbols used in the formula have the following meanings:

  • w – the website being analyzed;
  • a – an individual Wikipedia article;
  • A – the set of Wikipedia articles covered by the analysis;
  • Aref – the subset of articles containing at least one reference;
  • Pa – the corrected cumulative number of pageviews received by article a during the selected 12-month period;
  • Ra – the total number of references in article a;
  • Ra,w – the number of references in article a that point to website w;
  • PR(w) – the final PR score assigned to website w.

Why are pageviews included?

A reference in a widely read article is potentially visible to more readers than the same reference in an article receiving very little traffic. Taking pageviews into account therefore gives greater weight to websites appearing in more popular articles.
Raw pageview counts, however, can differ by several orders of magnitude. If they were used directly, a small number of exceptionally popular articles could dominate the ranking. The model reduces this effect by using the square root of the pageview count.
This transformation preserves the ordering of article popularity while making the differences less extreme. For example, an article with four times as many pageviews receives twice—not four times—the pageview weight.

Why divide by the total number of references?

Dividing by Ra, the total number of references in an article, accounts for the relative visibility of each website within that article’s reference list.
For example, a website represented by one of five references accounts for 20% of the reference list. The same website represented by one of one hundred references accounts for only 1%. The first occurrence therefore receives a greater share of the article’s total weight.
This normalization also limits the advantage of articles with exceptionally long bibliographies. Such articles do not automatically receive more total weight simply because they contain more references.

A worked example

Consider a hypothetical website w referenced by two Wikipedia articles:

In the first article, two of the ten references point to website w. The website therefore represents 20% of the article’s references. In the second article, one of five references points to the same website, which also represents 20%.
The PR score is calculated as follows:

PR(w)=1000010⋅2+4005⋅1=20+4=24

The first article contributes 20 to the score, while the second contributes 4. Although the website represents the same proportion of references in both articles, its contribution is greater in the first article because that article received more pageviews.
The resulting PR value is 24. This number is primarily useful for ranking websites relative to one another; it should not be interpreted as a percentage or probability.

Fair popularity: filtering and adjusting pageview data

The calculations include only pageviews classified in Wikimedia data as originating from users (agent = user). According to Wikimedia’s definition of a pageview, this classification is intended to distinguish user traffic from traffic generated by identified bots and web crawlers.
Nevertheless, the agent = user classification cannot eliminate every form of anomalous traffic or guarantee that every recorded visit reflects deliberate reader interest.
A well-known example is the unusually high popularity of the Wikipedia article about Cleopatra. The traffic was associated with a default voice-search suggestion on devices using Google Assistant, as reported by Inverse. As a result, the article received an unusually high number of pageviews that did not necessarily represent intentional interest in Cleopatra.
The Wikimedia Foundation also noted that the exceptionally high traffic received by this article did not reflect genuine reader interest. When preparing its list of the most popular English Wikipedia articles of 2024, the research team therefore applied additional screening, including checks based on the share of desktop traffic and the number of visits without referrer information.
For this reason, the present analysis applies additional procedures to identify and adjust anomalously high pageview counts, usually by reducing the recorded values. This approach is conceptually similar to the fair popularity mechanism used by WikiRank since 2020.
Consequently, Pa in the PR formula represents the corrected cumulative number of pageviews classified as originating from users. The square-root transformation is applied only after this correction.

Top 50 Websites

The following sections present rankings of the top 50 websites with the highest score in PR-model for some languages. The analysis included Wikipedia language editions thatcontained at least 500,000 articles (as of July 2026) and had an article depth of at least 10 (current statistics are available at meta.wikimedia.org).

The PR model represents only one possible way to measure website importance in Wikipedia references. Like every ranking method, it reflects specific methodological choices and is not free from limitations. The PR ranking should therefore be treated not as a definitive judgment about the web’s best information sources, but as a large-scale map of which websites are most visible within Wikipedia’s references when article readership is taken into account.
