Italian is a Romance language from the Indo-European family. According to Wikipedia, it was developed from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire. Alongside Sardinian, it closely resembles Latin. Approximately 85 million people spoke Italian in 2022. It’s an official language in Italy, San Marino, Switzerland (particularly in Ticino and Grisons), and the primary language of Vatican City. Italian also holds minority status in parts of Croatia and Slovenian Istria.

Besides its native regions, Italian is widely spoken by immigrant and expatriate groups in the Americas and Australia. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania, it’s recognized under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, though it’s not an official language there. Many Italian speakers are also fluent in local Italian dialects or other languages, especially those spoken in their family’s region of origin.

Italian plays a significant role in Europe, being an official language of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and a working language of the Council of Europe. It’s the second most commonly spoken native language in the European Union, with 67 million speakers (15% of the EU population) and is a second language for another 13.4 million EU citizens (3%). Counting speakers in non-EU European countries like Switzerland, Albania, the United Kingdom, and globally, the total number of Italian speakers is around 85 million. Italian is also the main language of the Holy See and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. It’s widely used in the musical world, especially in opera, with many Italian musical terms adopted internationally.
